Jason Davis and Daniel Walker met in Ellensburg, Washington on an archaeological dig. While touring in other prominent Washington State bands the two decided to relocate to Portland, Oregon and focus on a side project they had developed while on the road. Upon relocating the two recruited long time friend and drummer Benjamin Haysom, who at the time was playing for the indie/folk project Train Goes Sorry. In early 2010 the lineup was complete with addition of guitarist Zach Dilday.[2] The band's name "Archeology" is a reference to the two's interest in the science of archaeology.[3]
In 2009, they released 5 EPs and promoted their music by playing concerts on the West Coast of the United States alongside prominent bands Frightened Rabbit, Falling up, and Ruth (band). By the end of 2009 Archeology was one of the top artist on The Deli Magazine's charts.
In January 2010 the band finished recording their debut album, Memorial, which was released March 16, 2010. Buzz on the album has praised the duo's intricate arrangements and raw emotional honesty. The band supported the release with two national tours, one entitled "Archeology's Memorial Tour" and the other "Not All Who Wander are Lost" which included legs with bands The Fling and Lakes.[4] The band was featured on Teen Vogue for their recent music video for single "By the By" and received airplay on VH1 for their second music video for the single "White Walls".[5][6]
